GMC Takes a Large Step Towards Self-Driving Cars

It's hard to imagine drivers in the greater Louisville area, and beyond, behind the wheel of a self-driving car, but if GMC has its way that day could come sooner than we think. After all, we are talking about the automaker that has brought vehicles that can parallel park themselves, warn drivers of oncoming collisions, and adujust braking automatically to fruition, so what's to say that they can't or won't take the next logical step?

This question excites everyone here at Coppe Chevrolet GMC, as it sounds like something straight out of a good sci-fi story. Only, this is cold hard reality we're talking about, and it could really happen! Just imagine a a GMC Terrain or GMC Yukon that can drive itself from point A to point B without requiring input from the driver? It could open up a new world of possibilities for those who cannot drive due to a disability, and it would certainly make the roads safer by removing driver error from the equation, though we admit that system errors would also present a whole new problem.

Still, it's hard not to imagine what such a system might be like or how it would even be designed. The brilliant minds at GMC, however, claim to have it covered.

"The technologies [GM is] developing will provide an added convenience by partially or t even completely taking over the driving duties," explains Alan Taub, VP, Global Research and Developments, GM. "The primary goal, though, is safety. Future generation safety systems will eliminate the crash altogether by interceding on behalf of drivers before they're even aware of a hazardous situation."1

So, will we be sitting behind the wheel of a self driving car or barking commands at one through our smartphone any time soon? Not likely, as the technology is reportedly as many as ten years away. Still, there's no saying that the designers and engineers for the American automaker won't make a breakthrough sooner than anticipated.

Of course, those of you out there who prefer to have full control behind the wheel can always do so by test drive a new GMC model here at 306 Main St Louisville, NE 68037 today, simply by contacting us online or by phone at (888) 806-2330.
